Oak Harbor stages 2nd comeback win

OAK HARBOR – Two matches into the season and the Oak Harbor volleyball team is making a name for itself.

Call them the Comeback Kids.

Down two games to none in their non-conference match against Jackson (2-1 overall), Oak Harbor (2-0) battled back to win three straight games, defeating the Timberwolves 21-25, 24-26, 25-23, 25-14, 15-12 Thursday.

Tuesday, Oak Harbor trailed Kamiak by 10 points in the fourth and final game before bouncing back to win.

“We fight hard and the girls kept their spirits up. They have a lot of faith in each other,” said Oak Harbor coach Kerri Molitor.

Ashley Kingma led the Wildcats with 43 assists and six aces. Kingma has 12 aces in two matches.

Jennifer Muzzall had 18 kills and Heidi McNeill added 18 kills and three blocks for Oak Harbor.

Ashley Allen had 20 kills and Chelsea Crim had 19 assists to lead Jackson.

Mountlake Terrace 3, Arlington 2: At Mountlake Terrace, Samantha Richardson served 24-for-26 with eight aces, Nicole Berlin had nine kills and Rachel Stanley had 20 assists to lead Mountlake Terrace (1-0 overall) to a 25-11, 21-15, 21-25, 25-14, 15-12 non-league win over Arlington (0-2). Keesha Carpentar had 19 assists and served 16-for-17 with two aces, Kari O’Sullivan had nine kills and Shayna Prause had 10 kills for Arlington.

Nooksack Valley 3, Granite Falls 1: At Granite Falls, Michaela Dudder had seven kills, Diana Haug served 21-for-22 and had four digs and Julie Saltmarsh had six blocks to lead Granite Falls (0-2 overall) in its non-league loss to Nooksack Valley (1-0).

Shorecrest 3, Lake Stevens 0: At Shoreline, sisters Anna and Lauren Herold combined to lead Shorecrest to a non-league sweep, 25-21, 25-21, 25-15, over Lake Stevens. Anna finished with 34 assists and Lauren had 14 digs to lead Shorecrest to a 2-0 start. Molly Bradshaw was 9-for-9 from the serving line with 12 assists for Lake Stevens (1-1).

Skykomish 3, Cashmere C team 0: At Skykomish, Amanda Zerger served 15-for-16 and Charlotte Brown had 10 kills to lead Skykomish (2-0 overall) to the 25-22, 25-12, 25-17 non-league win.

Shoreline Christian 3, Seattle Lutheran 0: At Shoreline, Brittany Van Hall had 11 kills, Jenette DeKoekKoek handed out 15 assists and Shoreline Christian cruised to the non-conference victory, 25-15, 25-13, 25-6. It was the first game for both teams.

Monroe 3, Meadowdale 0: At Lynnwood, Kelsey Brennan had five kills and five blocks, Jen Fox had seven kills and Roxanne Ranko served 13-for-15 with two aces to lead Monroe (1-1 overall) to a 25-16, 25-16, 25-21 non-league win over Meadowdale (0-2). Tessa Eberth had 10 assists, Janette Ruiz had 12 digs and Maggie Brewe had three kills and four blocks for Meadowdale.

Stanwood 3, Mariner 1: At Everett, Amanda Allred had 29 assists, Sarah Schemenaver had eight kills and Krista VonMoos had six kills to lead Stanwood (1-1 overall) to a 22-25, 25-15, 25-19, 25-16 non-league win over Mariner (0-2). Heather Berg had seven kills and seven blocks for Mariner.

Archbishop Murphy 3, Orcas Island 0: At Eastsound, Kayelynne Huggins had five service aces, Ashley Werner had nine assists and seven digs, Lisa Coate had six kills and Christina Mitchell had six blocks to lead Archbishop Murphy (1-0 overall) to a 25-21, 25-20, 25-23 non-league win over Orcas Island (0-1).

Coupeville 3, Lakewood 1: At Coupeville, after dropping the first game, Coupeville took the final three games in the non-conference match. Heather Fakkema was 25-for-26 on serves with six aces and Mindy Horr added 28 assists to lead Coupeville. Also contributing to the victory were Kirsty Croghan (13 kills) and Taniel Lamb (17-for-17 with eight kills).

Eastlake 3, Cedarcrest 1: At Sammamish, Betsy Westermann had seven kills and 18 digs, Britney Carlson had 22 assists, and Jessica Gunderson had five kills for Cedarcrest (1-1 overall) but Eastlake won the non-conference match 25-23, 17-25, 25-8, 25-18.

Girls swimming

Jackson 125, Stanwood 44: Jackson swept the relays and won all the individual events but the 500-yard freestyle in the non-league opener for both teams.

Records-Stanwood 0-1 overall. Jackson 1-0.
