EVERETT – In a game that meant so much so early in the season, Oak Harbor defeated Lake Stevens 54-49 in a grils basketball game Monday night, despite another dominating performance by Vikings star Katie Holloway.
Holloway scored 28 points and added 14 rebounds, but it wasn’t enough to carry the Vikings (3-2 Wesco North, 7-2 overall) to the Western Conference North Division victory.
“It wasn’t in the cards for us tonight,” Lake Stevens head coach Tom Tri said.
“They hit the big shots when they needed it the most,” Tri added, referring to two of Felicia Hill’s 3-point baskets, one of which she made at the end of the third quarter as the buzzer sounded. The other 3-pointer came late in the fourth.
“Those two threes were daggers” said Tri, whose team rallied twice from 11-point deficits in the second half before watching Oak Harbor (5-1, 8-2) pull away.
Point guard Amanda Watts Watts scored 18 points, three of them coming right after Lake Stevens had erased one of those deficits.
“Watts played awesome for Oak Harbor. She took care of the basketball,” Tri said.
Heidi McNeill added 14 points and 12 rebounds for Oak Harbor, which has won five straight games.
Holloway, meanwhile, continues to dominate her opponents. She has averaged 26.5 and 15 rebounds in her last two contests.
Oak Harbor and Lake Stevens entered the game with only one league loss each. The Wildcats remain in a tie for second place in the Wesco North.
The Vikings look to rebound from the hard-fought loss. “To come back from 11 points down twice shows a lot of heart,” Tri said.
