OAK HARBOR – The girls soccer season came to a swift end for the Kamiak Knights as Oak Harbor’s Katy Nydam scored the game-winning goal less than 30 seconds into Tuesday’s Western Conference loser-out playoff game.
Nydam took control of the ball off a Gretyl Pruss pass in front of a pack of players about 15 yards in front of Kamiak goalkeeper Marie Kresbach and knocked home the game winner.
Oak Harbor advanced to another loser-out game against Shorecrest at 5:30 p.m. tonight at Shoreline Stadium.
For Nydam, the quick goal was not a surprise but part of the Wildcat game plan.
“Scoring the first goal is an advantage, it sets the mindset for the game,” said the senior. “We make an early goal part of our game plan.”
For Kamiak, it became a long night when play rarely moved in the Knights’ direction. Most of the game was contested within 35 yards of the Kamiak goal.
In the second half, sophomore Jennifer White picked up two quick goals to give the Wildcats an insurmountable 3-0 lead. White first rammed home a goal from 20 yards out eight minutes into the half. Five minutes later, her pass trickled along the goal line, rolling in and out of the goalmouth. A conference by the officials to settle points of view on the play decided to allow the goal.
Two minutes later, Kara Bloch sealed the Knights’ fate with a Wildcat goal and the 4-0 final margin.
Devon Shulock had a relatively quiet night as she picked up the shutout in goal for the Wildcats.
