Oam wins all-Jackson final

MILL CREEK – Jackson’s Richard Oam, the No. 1 seed, defeated teammate Alex Lin, the No. 2 seed, 6-3, 6-2 to take the Wesco South boys tennis singles championship Saturday at Jackson High School.

Both players qualified for the 4A District 1 tournament Thursday through Saturday at Stanwood.

In the doubles championship, the top-seeded Edmonds-Woodway pair of Scott Sheldon and Willie Guo defeated Shorewood’s second-seeded team of Jesse Knutson and Spencer Mestel 6-2, 5-7, 6-1. Both teams advanced to the district meet.

The third and fourth places in singles and doubles will be decided Monday.

Wesco North meet: Chad Merkley of Snohomish defeated teammate Brandon Kent 6-2, 6-1 for the singles championship. Both players advanced to the 4A District 1 tournament which begins Thursday at Stanwood. Matt Nguyen of Cascade and Steven Kesler of Lake Stevens came through the consolation bracket to claim the division’s third and fourth district berths.

In the doubles final, Stanwood’s Daniel Redfern and Zach Tafoya knocked off Snohomish’s Andy Bell and Aaron Sher 6-1, 6-4. Both teams moved on to the district tournament. The final two district berths will be decided Monday.

Wesco 3A meet: At Mill Creek, Shorecrest’s Marco Dehmel overwhelmed Everett’s Andy Monro in the singles final. Meanwhile, the Scots’ Matt LaCourse won a third-set tiebreaker to beat Patrick Donnelly of Meadowdale for third place. All four players advanced to the 3A District 1 tournament Friday and Saturday at Mt. Vernon H.S.

In the doubles competition, the Shorecrest team of Brian Sharkey and David Ehrlichman defeated Blaine Weller and Jake Haight of Meadowdale for the championship. The Meadowdale team of Blaine and Jace Sherrill plays Alex Schulz and Tyler Allen of Everett for third place on Monday. All four teams advance to the district meet.
