Oam wins Wesco South singles title

MILL CREEK — For the second consecutive year, Richard Oam of Jackson faced one of his teammates for the Western Conference South Division championship.

And for the second season in a row Oam won in straight sets to win the conference championship and advance to the 4A District 1 meet that begins Thursday at Stanwood High School.

Oam defeated Robin Choi 6-2, 6-1 Tuesday night in the Wesco South final at Jackson High School as both kept their seasons alive.

Last year’s 4A District 1 champion, Oam came into the tournament as the No. 1 seed and didn’t drop a set in winning three straight matches.

Mountlake Terrace’s Rhett Bouche defeated Kamiak’s Abe Ahn 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 for third place. Bouche and Ahn also advance to the district playoffs.

At Jackson H.S.

Top 4 to 4A District 1 tournament

Consolation round—Ahn (K) def. Kleczynski (K) 6-1, 6-1; Bouche (MT) def. Shin (SW) 6-4, 6-3.

Third/Fourth—Bouche (MT) def. Ahn (K) 3-6, 6-1, 6-1.

Final—Oam (J) def. Choi (J) 6-2, 6-1.

Wesco South 4A doubles: At Mill Creek, Edmonds-Woodway duo Willie Guo and Ryan Cho bounced back from 4-6 first-set deficit to win 6-1, 6-1 and defeat teammates Max Ortiz and Mike Stepenski in the final of the 4A Wesco South tournament.

Shorewood’s Scott McConnell and Tristan Reni defeated teammates Adrew Wilson and Daniel McAuliffe for third and fourth place respectively. All four teams qualify for the 4A District 1 tournament.

At Jackson H.S.

Top 4 to 4A District 1 tournament

Consolation round—Wilson-McAuliffe (SW) def. Patterson-Zajack (K) 7-5, 7-6; Reni-McConnell (SW) def. Bae-Rojas (J) 6-4, 7-5.

Third/Fourth—Reni-McConnell (SW) def. Wilson-McAuliffe (SW) 6-4, 7-5.

Final—Guo-Cho (EW) def. Ortiz-Stepenski (EW)

Wesco 3A singles: At Mill Creek, Everett’s Andy Monro, the Wesco North No. 1 seed was beating South No. 3 seed Ricardo Cellis 5-0 before Cellis retired due to injury and Monro won the Wesco 3A title.

Shorecrest’s Jason Hollenbeck, and Meadowdale’s Scott Bohmke and Alex Casper also qualified for the 3A District 1 tournament at Mount Vernon High School, which begins Thursday.

At Jackson H.S.

Top 5 to 4A District 1 tournament

Consolation round—Bohmke (Mea) def. Ansdell (L) 6-3, 6-4; Hollenbeck (SC) def. Casper (Mea) 6-1, 6-1.

Fifth place—Casper (Mea) def. Ansdell (L).

Third/Fourth—Hollenbeck (SC) def. Bohmke (Mea) 6-2, 6-3.

Final—Monroe (E) def. Cellis (SC) 5-0, inj retired.

Wesco 3A doubles: At Mill Creek, the Wesco South No. 1 seeded team of Pat Donnelly and Jake Haight from Meadowdale High School advanced to the 3A District 1 tournament winning in the finals of the Wesco 3A tournament. The fifth-place match was postponed and will be played today.

At Jackson H.S.

Top 5 to 4A District 1 tournament

Consolation round—Uppinghouse-Bright (SC) def. Yuen-Wieben (L) 6-1, 6-0; Meyer-Aylesworth (A) def. Morin-Heath (A) 4-6, 6-4, 6-2.

Third/Fourth—Uppinghouse-Bright (SC) def. Meyer-Aylesworth (A) 6-3, 6-3

Final—Donnelly-Haight (Mea) def. Sharkey-LaCourse (SC) 1-6, 6-3, 6-0.
