ODP team earns state’s first national title

The Washington State girls ‘88 soccer team won the national championship at the U.S. Youth Soccer Olympic Development Nationals, held March 19-21 in Las Vegas, Nev.

The 18-member squad included three players from Snohomish County: midfielder Danielle Oster of Mill Creek, midfielder Chelsea Bumbaugh of Monroe and forward Alexandra Kirk of Edmonds.

The national title is the first for the 38-year-old Washington State Youth Soccer Association.

“I’m so proud of the girls,” the team’s head coach, Scott Newman, said in a WSYSA press release. “They are the first Washington (Olympic Development) team to ever win the national title. I asked them if they wanted to make history, and they did.”

The Washington team, which qualified for nationals by winning the Western Regional, defeated North Texas 1-0 in the semifinals, then blanked Connecticut 2-0 in the championship game. Courtney Bell of Bainbridge Island scored both goals for Washington in the title game.

Gymnastics

McClure victorious at Jurassic Classic Brett McClure of the U.S. men’s gymnastics team won the gold medal on the parallel bars at the Jurassic Classic, held March 20 in Calgary, Alberta.

McClure, from Mill Creek, topped all competitors with a score of 9.65. He also won a silver medal (floor exercises) and two bronze medals (pommel horse and high bar).

Schindler leads Rising Stars: Four members of the Marysville-based Rising Stars rhythmic gymnastics team won titles at the Region 2 meet held March 20-21 in Shoreline.

Libby Schindler of Arlington, who was named the region’s Level 7 Athlete of the Year, won the floor exercises and finished second on the rope, ball and ribbon to win the all-around in the Level 7 junior division.

Other region champs for the Rising Stars included Nichole Thoma of Lake Stevens (Level 6 senior), Nina Nikolova of Marysville (Level 7 senior) and Hazel Frank of Everett (Level 8 senior).

Thoma, Nikolova and Frank each won all four events.

Also, Alicia DeRousse of Rising Stars was named the Level 7 Coach of the Year.

Five Leading Edge gymnasts headed to regionals: The Everett-based Leading Edge Gymnastics Club qualified five of its members for the regional meet during the Washington State Boys Gymnastics Championships on March 20-21 in Seattle.

Leading the way was Jonathon Chapman, 14, of Everett, who won the floor exercises, vault, parallel bars and high bar to win the all-around championship in Class 3.

Also qualifying for regionals were Chris Sabin, 12, of Mountlake Terrace (Class 5), Peter Moser, 10, of Everett (Class 5), Tucker Rabel, 10, of Snohomish (Class 6) and Nicholas Wees, 10, of Everett (Class 6).

The regionals are scheduled for Saturday and Sunday in Billings, Mont.

Bowling

Everett High wins state title: A team from Everett High School won the B Division championship at the Washington State Bowlers Proprietors Associaition State Tournament, held March 6-7 in Moses Lake.

David Bramall of Everett was named the division’s MVP.

Named to the all-state boys team were Jason Wilson of Cascade and Brandon Crain of Lake Stevens. Jimmy Yost of Mariner, and Nathan Tuttle and Jordan Plunkett of Cascade made the second team.

Crain rolled the high game of the tournament (299).

On the girls’ side, Candice Airport of Mariner was named to the first team all-state squad.

At the WSBPA individual tournament at Evergreen Lanes in Everett, Mitch Baker of Marysville-Pilhuck won the A boys division with an average of 215.875. Tiffany Trieschmann of Cascade won the A girls division with an average of 189.

Kali Mudie of Lynnwod won the B girls division (186.375). Meredith Collins of Kamiak was second (165).

Basketball

Mavericks crowned league champs: The Mavericks, a seventh-grade select boys basketball team from Snohomish County, recently won the Seattle AAU Winter League Championship.

The Mavericks finished the season with a 49-5 record.

Team members included Tyler Stracener, Roger O’Neill, Nate Hards, Nick Hardy, Chase Anselment, Karsten Strieby, Kyle Talbot, Alex Ardiente, Austin Ludeman, Chris Johnson and James Peterson.

The team was coached by Rich O’Neill, John Hardy and Collin Hards.

Rowing

Everett’s novice team places first: The novice team from the Everett Rowing Club opened its season March 20 with a first-place finish at the Northwest Regatta on Green Lake.
