Off the Wall: Bothell’s Pattilo races to record first

LAKEWOOD Paige Pattilo literally ran away from the field on Saturday, as the Bothell junior set a new course record, covering the 5 kilometers in a blistering 18 minutes, 29.5 seconds to win the varsity girls race at the 21st annual Hole in the Wall Invitational at Lakewood High School.

Pattilo finished the race a whopping one minute, 39 seconds ahead of the runner-up, Cedarcrest freshman Caitlin Ramirez. The fleet Cougar broke the 2001 course record held by Mt. Baker’s Bobeya Krishnek (18:30.1).

Another freshman, Granite Falls’ Anna Jensen, took third with a time of 20 minutes, 26 seconds, giving Snohomish county schools an impressive 1-2-3 finish in the 13- team meet.

Sehome High won the girls team title, placing five runners in the top 17. Locally, Granite Falls finished fourth in the meet, followed by Lakewood’s sixth- and Bothell’s seventh-place finish.

On the varsity boys side, Zach Gussin, a Ballard senior, broke the tape in 16 minutes, 12 seconds. Second place went to Mount Vernon senior Scott Cary (16:28), and third to Lakewood senior Tyler Rapp (16:33). Fellow Cougar teammate Scott Skiles finished 11 seconds behind Rapp to place fifth.

The Bothell varsity boys won the meet, placing four runners in the top 13, and Lynnwood placed second with Lakewood, last year’s 2A state runner-up, finishing third.
