Okay, so the Huskies are hopeless, the Seahawks are playing like wounded Seachickens and although I haven’t even photographed the Cougars this year, I have it from other photographers that they are even worse than those kids on Montlake. Simply put, it’s hard to be a sports fan in the northwest, much less a sports photographer in the northwest. Let’s not even talk about the Sonics or the Mariners, I’m having enough of a hard time photographing our fall sports. They are painful.
I use to be pretty good at shooting winners. Winning photos are MUCH easier to make than losing photos. Winners are happy, they emote joy. Losers, more often than not, just walk off the field. They don’t do squat. I made a photo of Tyrone Willingham, head coach of the Huskies, walking off the field after the Stanford loss, thinking that he would be fired shortly after the game. Ultimately, he wasn’t canned, but the photo is still nice. I like the lights of the stadium and the look on his face.
Sometimes you get lucky with losers though and they react a bit.
At this point, if I were a fan, I would wear a paper bag over my head too. The view from the inside might be a little better.
