SEATTLE _ Sunday is going to be a day of rest for bruised Seattle Mariners catcher Miguel Olivo.
One day after he suffered cuts and bruises on his face with a head-first slide into first base, the catcher was taking a pre-arranged day off. Manager Eric Wedge said Olivo didn’t come away with any major injuries, but he gave him the day off anyway.
“I just want to stay ahead of it,” Wedge said.
Olivo suffered a cut above his eye during a dive into first base in the 11th inning of Saturday night’s win over the New York Yankees.
Wedge said he didn’t want his players diving head-first, but he understood Olivo’s snap reasoning behind it.
“The bottom line is, when you’re competing and you sniff something our, you go for it,” Wedge said. “That’s what winners do.”
