COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Olympic gold medalist Sarah Hughes is now a Hall of Famer.
The 2002 champion headlines the newest class for the U.S. Figure Skating Hall of Fame, joining three-time world pairs medalists Jenni Meno and Todd Sand and longtime Ice Capades director Robert Turk. The class, announced Thursday, will be inducted during a Jan. 21 ceremony at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Spokane, Wash.
Hughes won the gold medal at the Salt Lake City Games with the most technically demanding program in Olympic history. Then 16, she was the fourth-youngest Olympic champion. She also won a bronze medal at the 2001 world championships.
Hughes skated with “Stars on Ice” and did occasional shows after Salt Lake, but most of her focus has been on her education. She graduated from Yale in the spring.
Meno and Sand were three-time U.S. champions who won bronze medals at the world championships in 1995 and ‘96, and a silver in 1998. They are each three-time Olympians, skating together at the Lillehammer and Nagano Olympics and with other partners at the Albertville Games.
The couple, who married in 1995, now coach in Southern California.
Turk, who joined Ice Capades as a line skater, spent more than 22 years with the show as a director and producer/choreographer. He also choreographed many skating specials.
