EASTSOUND – The Darrington volleyball team’s streak of post-season appearances came to an end Monday night.
Orcas Island defeated the Loggers 3-2 (22-25, 25-19, 25-18, 20-25, 15-9) in a Northwest B League match and eliminated Darrington from playoff play for the first time since 1991, according to Darrington coach Greg Powell.
The Vikings (6-4 in league, 6-4 overall), who have already clinched a Northwest B League playoff berth, were the latest to triumph against the Loggers in five sets.
“We’ve lost several matches that way,” Powell said of the Loggers’ season record in five-set matches. “We’re a young team and haven’t been able to come out on top.”
Maggie Wicken was a perfect 13-for-13 on serves, Jill Frable recorded 10 kills and two blocks, and freshman setter Mandy Powell finished with 33 assists for the Loggers (2-8, 5-9).
Meridian 3, Marysville-Pilchuck 1: At Marysville, Kaytee Thomas had seven kills and four service aces and Laura Degerness had 11 kills and six stuff blocks for M-P, but the Tomahawks lost the non-conference match 25-23, 16-25, 25-20, 25-22.
Mount Vernon Christian 3, Shoreline Christian: At Mount Vernon, the Hurricanes beat the Crusaders in straight games (25-12, 25-20, 25-22) to win the Northwest A/B League match.
