Pac-12 women’s tournament roundup: Oregon upsets Washington

Associated Press

SEATTLE — Sabrina Ionescu hit two free throws with 6.4 seconds to go to give Oregon a 70-69 upset victory over 11th-ranked Washington in a Pac-12 Conference Tournament quarterfinal on Friday night.

Washington’s Kelsey Plum, the all-time NCAA scoring leader, attempted a 3-pointer from the top of the key at the buzzer, but the shot was partially blocked by Ruthy Hebard.

Sixth-seeded Oregon (20-12) advances to Saturday’s semifinal against second-seeded and No. 10-ranked Stanford (26-5), which rolled past Washington State 66-63.

Plum finished with 34 points. Lexi Bando had 23 points and Ionescu added 18 to lead Oregon.

Plum’s 3- pointer to open the fourth quarter put No. 3 seed Washington (27-5) up 60-51, but Bando scored 11 consecutive points to fuel a 15-4 run that put Oregon up 66-64 with 4:18 remaining.

Chantel Osahor, who grabbed a Pac-12 tournament record 27 rebounds to go along with 12 points and six assists, converted a 3-point play to put the Huskies on top 69-66 with 3:05 left. Lexi Bando hit a jumper with 1:19 remaining to pull Oregon within 69-68.

Oregon St. 65, California 49

SEATTLE — Sydney Wiese scored 26 points and No. 6 Oregon State rolled into the Pac-12 Tournament semifinals with a win over California.

Wiese and the Beavers (28-3) won their sixth straight, leading by as many as 16 in the first half and holding off every run by the Golden Bears. It was Oregon State’s second win in a week over California, knocking off the Bears in the regular-season finale by 15.

Lynnwood High School alum Mikayla Pivec added 17 points for Oregon State, the top seed in the conference tournament. The Beavers won their first Pac-12 Tournament title a year ago, the precursor to a run to the Final Four. They will face No. 15 UCLA or in Saturday’s semifinals.

Kristine Anigwe led California (19-13) with 26 points. The Bears likely needed one more victory to bolster their NCAA Tournament hopes.

Instead, it’ll be an antsy wait for California when the NCAA tournament field is announced on March 13.

UCLA 77, Arizona St. 68

SEATTLE — Jordin Canada scored 24 points, Nicole Kornet scored 12 of her 16 points in the first half, and No. 15 UCLA used a huge first quarter to beat Arizona State in the Pac-12 Tournament quarterfinals.

The fifth-seeded Bruins led by 19 after one quarter and by as many as 26 in the first half, moving into a semifinal showdown with top-seed and sixth-ranked Oregon State. UCLA handed the Beavers one of their two conference losses during the regular season.

UCLA (23-7) was certainly impressive for three quarters in knocking out the fifth-seeded Sun Devils. Canada made 9 of 15 shots, added seven assists and four rebounds. Monique Billings added 19 points and 11 rebounds, and the Bruins bested the Sun Devils for the second time in a matter of days. The Bruins won at Arizona State 55-52 in the regular season finale.

Sabrina Haines led Arizona State (19-12) with 14 points and Sophie Brunner added 13.

Stanford 66, WSU 36

SEATTLE — Karlie Samuelson had 21 points and 10th-ranked Stanford scored the first 21 points of the game on the way to a victory over Washington State in the Pac-12 Tournament quarterfinals.
