Pair combine to keep Monroe unbeaten

MARYSVILLE – Hopkins to Bumbaugh: the combination doesn’t roll off the tongue nearly as well as Stockton to Malone, but the former duo helped the Monroe girls soccer team roll to another victory on Tuesday.

Midfielder Chelsea Bumbaugh scored twice in the first half on assists from Keena Hopkins and Monroe went on to defeat Marysville-Pilchuck 4-0 in a Western Conference North Division game. Bumbaugh found the net in the 28th and 32nd minutes of the first half to quickly lift the Bearcats from a 0-0 tie to a commanding 2-0 advantage.

“It’s always nice to get goals back-to-back that quickly,” said Monroe coach Kathleen Potthast, whose team improved to 3-0 in the Wesco North and overall.

Hopkins, a sophomore midfielder, finished with three assists for Monroe, which has outscored its opponents 12-0 this season.

“We have a pretty solid team,” Potthast said. “(Bumbaugh and Hopkins) are two key players, but our defense is just phenomenal. We haven’t allowed a lot of shots on goal this season.”

Junior sweeper Kayla Bell and two outside defenders, Kris Sowers and Kelly Merriman, have shut down opposing offenses, Potthast said. Sophomore goalkeeper Kayla Wangner recorded her third shutout for the Bearcats, who have matured after gaining a few years of experience.

“We’ve been pretty young the last couple years. We had seven freshmen (playing varsity) two years ago. Now those freshmen are juniors. The experience has paid off.”
