Panthers’ loss to M.I. isn’t all bad news

MERCER ISLAND – The Snohomish girls swim team’s loss Saturday had quite the silver lining.

In fact, it had six of them.

Mercer Island dealt Snohomish it’s first loss of the season, a 96-89 defeat at Mary Wayte Pool, but the Panthers posted six Class 4A state qualifying times in the meet.

The meet came down to the last event – the 400-meter freestyle relay – in which Snohomish (6-0, 8-1) needed a first-place and third-place finish to win. Unfortunately for the Panthers, the team of Jasmine Labitzke, Surya Manickam, Emily Ferreira and Meghan Blue could manage just a second-place showing.

Of course, staying with the theme of the day, it was in state-qualifying time. The Panthers qualified all three relay teams for the state 4A meet in November, winning both the 200 medley and 200 free.

“The girls swam a tremendous meet,” said Snohomish coach John Pringle. “To have the meet come down to the last event, against a perennial 3A powerhouse, is a phenomenal accomplishment.”

Blue (50 freestyle), Erica Field (diving), and Ferreira (100 breaststroke) were individual event winners for the Panthers. Field’s score of 176.10 was a career best, and Ferreira’s time was a state qualifier.

Ferreira also qualified for state in the 200 IM, and Kelsey Randolph qualified in the 100 fly. Both swimmers finished second.

“I told the girls they have nothing to be ashamed of,” said Pringle. “I was proud of the effort they gave.”
