Panthers win, but are closed out of postseason

SNOHOMISH – For the Panthers, victory was bittersweet.

The Snohomish Panthers have put together a four-game winning streak, beating the latest victim, Mount Vernon, 49-7 Friday night at Snohomish Veterans Memorial Stadium.

Despite the Panthers’ run, Snohomish (4-3 in league, 5-3 overall) was eliminated from postseason contention as Oak Harbor, Arlington and Cascade locked up the division’s three Quad-district playoff berths. Snohomish’s three heartbreaking losses were by a combined score of five points to the Quad-district-bound teams.

Snohomish’s Nate Van Duine scored two touchdowns, one on an 18-yard pass reception from Kevin Rodland and the other on a 60-yard punt return in the second quarter. Rodland was 3-for-5 for 139 yards passing and two TDs.

Snohomish’s defense stepped up, holding the Bulldogs off the scoreboard after their early first-quarter score. Tory Jelinek and Richard Johnson both had six tackles to lead the Panthers defense.

“Defense was the key tonight,” Snohomish coach Mark Perry said.
