Seahawks coach Pete Carroll confirmed after practice that they have acquired Marshawn Lynch in a trade with Buffalo, and that RB Julius Jones was released.
Here’s a partial transcript of what Carroll said about Lynch:
“We’ve been interested in Marshawn for a long time, and it finally came together, [general manager]John [Schneider] got it worked out with their people, and we’re pleased to get him. It’s a guy that I’ve known for a long time, going through recuirting in high school… We bring a guy into the program that we think is going to give us a little boost. We’ve emphasized trying to get this running game in order, and we hope that he’ll help us in that regard. So we’re pleased to get that done.
“It’s good that we’re on a break. It isn’t going to disrupt a game-week preparation, and we’ll get him in here as soon as possible and get to work.”
What does Lynch bring to the offense?
“He’s a very unique football player. He plays with great intensity, he’s got make-you-miss ability, and he’s also physical and runs tough. He has really good hands, he can catch the football as well, so he’s got great versatility to him. He’s got the speed to break away, he’s got an attitude about the way he runs that he can run the ball in tough situations. He’s a guy that can carry the load for you.
“He’s got a style about him that we like. People that have played against him and coached against him all know… Everybody has great respect for what he brings to game day, so we’re looking forward to that.”
Does he come in as the starter?
“We’re going to bring him in to play a lot, and we’ll wait and see when we get him here, but we’re going to play him a bunch.”
Is this a move to help now, in the future or both?
“The fact that Marshawn is 24 years old and he’s just getting started in his career and he’s got a couple of years left on his contract, we know that we’re digging in with him as one of our guys and we like the fact that he’s a young productive guy that can come to the program, but we’re counting on him coming to help us now. This is a move to help us immediately that we know has longevity to it because of his makeup and his age and all. We’re pumped about the opportunity to get him in here, and we’re counting on him by next week to be able to help us and do some things for us.”
Did you recruit him at USC?
“We did, and didn’t wind up getting him. We had to play against him, and he was very difficult to play against. He was a monster in college.”
