TODAY’S LINEUP

A look at the top sports stories in today’s Herald:

It’s official: Pete’s coming to Seattle

Seahawks CEO Tod Leiweke confirmed Monday that Pete Carroll will be the eighth head coach in franchise history and will also be the club’s vice president. As Carroll said goodbye to the folks in L.A., former Seahawks coach went on KJR in Seattle to talk about his ouster from the Seahawks. He then asked for a job as a overnight DeeJay.

Looking good in black

Scotty Grossman, a local 11-year-old who has Down Syndrome, recently earned a black belt in taekwondo after five years of hard work. Thanks Scotty. You just made a very old man feel very lazy.

McGwire admits to steroids. What?!?

Mark McGwire, who is now the Cardinals hitting coach, admitted Monday to having used steroids during his playing career. The Closer was shocked by this news. Of course The Closer was shocked when he received his mail today, so take that with a grain of salt.

WHL trade deadline no big deal

The WHL trade deadline came and went and some of the bigger trades that were rumored to possibly happen, didn’t. You mean nobody shipped Kyle Beach off to Timbuktu. Somebody’s anger management classes must be helping.

Dawgs out; Zags in

After a tough weekend of basketball in the desert, the UW men’s basketball team fell out of the top 25, while in-state rival Gonzaga jumped to No. 17 in the AP poll. The Closer watched some the Husky’s games this weekend and found himself wondering: How was this team ever ranked?

Stealing away the Wesco

The Monroe girls basketball team, which averages 30 steals a game, is a power in the Wesco North this season. The Closer’s mom always told him to steer clear of girls who steal. Sounds like Wesco opponents should be doing the same.

THE WARMUP PITCH

U.S. athletes have great timing

With only a month until the Vancouver Games, a number of U.S. athletes priming for the Winter Olympics are hitting their stride at just the right time. The Closer would hope they’re hitting their stride … it’s winter for crying out loud!

Holmgren flexes his mustache

A few days after announcing he’d be keeping Eric Mangini as coach, Mike Holmgren hired a new general manager on Monday. Who was it? Who cares, all he’ll be doing is pushing a few papers and getting The Big Show coffee.

Durant dominating

Oklahoma City guard Kevin Durant scored 38 Monday night to lead the Thunder over the Knicks and improve OKC’s record to 21-16 … and Brian Robinson continued to gnash his teeth.
