Lake Samish Kokanee
There’s another good kokanee lake within reasonable driving distance, when Lake Stevens gets a little too crowded and the fishery starts to wane during the summer months. Lake Samish puts out fish about the same size as Stevens, the playboat population is perhaps a little less intrusive, and the Samish fishery turns on in June and builds during the summer and fall.
Anthon Steen at Holiday Sports in Burlington (360-757-4361) said the bite is on for boaters trolling with downriggers at 30 to 45 feet, using standard kokanee setups — small dodger followed by Wedding Ring-type spinner tipped with maggot, piece of worm, white corn or Fire Corn. Most fishermen have been reporting easy limits, Steen said. The lake lies about 7 miles southeast of Bellingham, with a public access/ramp about midway down the lake on the I-5 side.
