San Juan Islands Chinook
Outstanding opportunity right now for some of the best king salmon fishing in the islands in years. One 40-pounder reported by Holiday Sports in Burlington; lots in the 30-pound range, and 20-pounders common. Both sides of Rosario Strait have been red hot – Thatcher Pass/James Island; Tide Point/Eagle Bluff; obstruction Pass; and Point Lawrence, among others. Herring is a bait of choice, but more than just a few dogfish in the area have many anglers going with spoons such as Kingfisher and Coho Killer, in the Irish Creme-style color patterns.
Checks at the Washington Park public ramp west of Anacortes on Friday showed 60 anglers in 23 boats with 20 chinook, and at the Bellingham ramp on Sunday (a derby day), 78 anglers in 31 boats with 42 chinook.
