Friday, Saturday and Sunday of Memorial Day Weekend, the last three days of the halibut season on the east end of the Strait of Juan de Fuca, should offer some very good fishing assuming the weather cooperates. The season so far has been excellent, even though the state’s total quota was cut slightly in anticipation of a somewhat down fishery. Many knowledgeable halibut fishermen are saying this has been a better harvest, in fact, than that of last year.
Dallas Bank is probably the prospect closest to Everett for the last three days of the season, according to Nick Kester of All Star Charters, since fish are now migrating westward from in-Sound areas. Kester said the bank has been putting out fish recently at a relatively shallow 80 to 160 feet, the water is a little better protected than at some spots, and there are launches available on Discovery Bay, at Port Townsend, and at John Wayne Marina and Sequim Bay State Park on Sequim Bay.
Dallas Bank lies directly north of Protection Island and is relatively easy to fish. If the tide is running too strongly or the wind is blowing, Kester said, anglers can tuck in behind the island, on either side, and still find fishing opportunity.
Kester has been using black label herring, octopus or squid as bait. If dogfish are a problem, most fishermen go to an 8-inch or 9-inch double-tail scampi jig, with scent.
