In roughly 16 years of playing and coaching softball, Linsi Moy had never seen anything like it.
The performance that stunned Moy, Archbishop Murphy’s fastpitch coach, was supplied by Murphy pitcher Brittany Allen. On April 28 Allen, a junior, tallied 25 strikeouts in an 11-inning, no-hit victory over Cascade Conference foe Granite Falls. Allen averaged 2.3 strikeouts per inning in the Wildcats’ 1-0 triumph.
“I’m very floored,” Moy said of Allen’s strikeout total, “because that’s a huge feat for an individual to have.”
Allen had Murphy’s only hit and stole two bases in the game.
Through last week Allen had a 1.55 earned-run average with 197 strikeouts in 104 innings. Her no-hitter last week was her third of the season, all in April. Allen throws five pitches and has been very consistent and effective with her curveball and screwball, Moy said.
Allen capped an excellent month Friday by tossing a two-hit shutout against previously unbeaten Cedarcrest. She struck out 13 for Murphy, which is in second place behind Cedarcrest. Both teams have clinched berths in the 2A District 1 tournament.
Allen’s softball achievements are extra-impressive, Moy said, considering in the summer Allen devotes significantly more time to soccer than softball.
Allen has been a force at the plate, too. Through last week Allen was batting .412 with on-base and slugging percentages of .492 and .451, respectively.
Wilde picks Clackamas CC
Zach Wilde, The Herald’s 2007-2008 Boys Basketball Player of the Year, verbally committed Sunday to play for Clackamas Community College in Oregon City, Ore. Wilde, a 6-foot-6 senior forward, led Snohomish in scoring (15.3 points per game), rebounding (6.8) and assists (4.0) this past season.
Other college commitments made by local athletes:
n Kamiak’s Alyssa Malland, a pitcher, signed an NCAA National Letter of Intent to play softball for Western Washington University. Last season Malland received All-Wesco South second-team recognition.
n Snohomish’s Nick Oglesby will play football for Pacific Lutheran University. He was an All-Wesco North first-team offensive lineman and a second-team inside linebacker this past fall.
n Jordan Carter of Lake Stevens committed to play basketball at Pacific University in Forest Grove, Ore. The point guard was an All-Wesco North second-team honoree this past season.
Snohomish coach honored
Snohomish’s Kevin Judkins has been named wrestling coach of the year by the Snohomish County Wrestling Officials Association. Judkins will receive a plaque this week, SCWOA president Greg Ortega said. Judkins, who retired from coaching after this past season, earned the award for leading Snohomish to a banner year that included a dual-meet victory over Class 4A state champion Lake Stevens and an individual state title for senior Brad Perry, Ortega said.
Kickoff Classic matchups
The 2008 Emerald City Kickoff Classic features five football games Sept. 6 at Qwest Field. The matchups are: Class 1A Cascade Christian vs. 2A Fife at 9:30 a.m.; 3A Eastside Catholic vs. 4A Eisenhower at noon; 4A Puyallup vs. 4A Bellarmine Prep at 3 p.m.; 3A Kennedy vs. 4A Kentwood at 5:30 p.m.; and Punahou (Hawaii) vs. 4A Central Kitsap at 8 p.m.
The 2008 Emerald City Volleyball Invitational is the same weekend. Three 4A teams from Washington (Bellarmine Prep, Central Kitsap and Eastlake) along with Punahou (Hawaii) will compete in a jamboree format Sept. 5 at Eastlake High School in Sammamish.
