CORVALLIS, Ore. — As much as anything, the University of Washington women’s basketball team fell victim to Destiny on Sunday.
Destiny Slocum scored a career-high 30 points, including a career-best-tying five 3-pointers, and No. 11 Oregon State never trailed in its 78-67 victory over the Huskies in Pac-12 action Sunday.
Slocum shot 11-of-17 from the floor and collected seven rebounds and six assists. Former Lynnwood High School standout Mikayla Pivec had 17 points and five rebounds and Taya Corosdale had nine points and a career-high 14 rebounds for Oregon State (12-2, 2-0 Pac-12).
The Beavers, who have won four in a row, led by as many as 15 points in the first half. Washington used a 12-4 run, including back-to-back 3-pointers by Alexis Griggsby, to trim the deficit to 42-38 midway through the third quarter but Corosdale answered with a 3 to spark a 10-0 spurt that pushed the lead back into double figures until the closing seconds.
Amber Melgoza had 20 points and Griggsby scored 15 for Washington (7-8, 0-3).
Griggsby, who didn’t attempt a shot in the first half, has scored 41 points — including 11 3-pointers — in the past two games, her first two career starts. She had scored 26 points this season up to that point.
Former Edmonds-Woodway High School standout Missy Peterson scored four points and grabbed a pair of rebounds for the Huskies, who have lost five in a row.
Washington struggled in the first half, hitting just 29 percent from the field. UW trailed 38-26 at halftime. Slocum had 18 points in the first half, connecting on 7-of-11 from the field. The rest of her team shot 7-of-24.
