UW quarterback Jake Locker met with reporters this afternoon to talk about the hire of Steve Sarkisian, and said he and his teammates were excited about their new coach.
Sarkisian met with the team this morning before he was introduced in a press conference, and the players like what they heard.
“One of the biggest things, he came in this morning to our team meeting and said ‘It’s a clean slate for everybody from this point on. I don’t care what you did in the past, I don’t care what happened. Everybody can start fresh right now, but the decisions you make from here on out are going to be documented and dealt with accordingly,’” Locker said. “For a lot of our guys that was exciting to them. If they had trouble in the classroom or trouble on the field or whatever it may be, that might have kept them from being on the field that stuff is forgotten now and these guys get a fresh start, and if they’re willing to work hard they can put themselves in a good situation. I think that’s exciting to a lot of the guys and it’s something that will help us move forward I believe. That’s one of the best things he said in the meeting this morning.”
Locker said he was also excited about having a coach who has mentored quarterbacks who have gone on to the NFL, and that, in general, the team is looking foward to working with their new coach.
“I think guys were excited,” he said. “I think the energy he brought, everybody felt it. He’s a younger guy, I think guys feel they might be able to relate to him a little bit better. and like I said, with the things he said to use, a lot of guys felt like you know what, this is an opportunity for us to get on the right track and be able to put whatever it may be in the past, especially this season, and go forward and try and change the way things are around here.”
