Playoff allocations announced

There were no surprises Monday when the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association released its fall postseason tournament allocations.

As expected 4A schools in District 1 received three state berths for all fall sports this year and next.

With the exception of girls cross country, 3A schools will get two this year and three next. The district will send three girls cross country teams to state this year as well.

In Class 2A the district got three berths each year in most sports. It will get four in boys cross country this year and four in both years in girls cross country.

The district’s Class 1A schools are combined with its B schools for boys (two this year, three next) and girls soccer (one each year). The district’s 1A football teams will compete with teams from Districts 2 and 3 for two state berths each season. It’s boys cross country teams, which also compete with Districts 2 and 3, will receive three state berths each season. The girls, which are combined with the B schools, will get seven berths this year and six next season. The volleyball teams will get one berth this year and two next.

The B volleyball teams, which compete in a tri-district format with Districts 2 and 3, will get three state berths this year and four next season. The B-11 football teams from Districts 1, 2, 3 and 4 will divide five state berths this season and six next year.

Once the allocations are made, it is up to the districts as to how they are awarded.

Prior to the start of the football season, the Western Conference North and South divisions reached tentative agreements with the Kingco 4A and the North division of the South Puget Sound League to pool their allocations and play six bi-district games for six state berths.

District 1 has not released a format for 3A or 2A district playoffs. Neither have the formats for the 1A tri-district or B-11 quad district playoffs been revealed.

In 4A girls soccer the top Wesco North and South teams will advance directly to state. The next three North and South teams will play a six-team, single-elimination tournament for the third berth.

In Class 3A girls soccer, the first six Northwest League teams qualify for and eight-team, double-elimination tournament. The other two district berths will go to the winners of crossover playoff games between Cedarcrest and South Whidbey of the Cascade Conference and Shorecrest and Lynnwood of the Wesco South.

The Class 2A girls soccer format has not been released.

The Northwest 1A/B girls soccer champion advances directly to state. The runner-up must win two quad-district playoff games to reach the state playoffs.

The top two Northwest 1A/B boys soccer teams advanced directly to state. The third-place team must win a bi-district playoff to advance.

In volleyball the top four teams from the Wesco North and South will play an eight-team, double-elimination tournament for three state berths.
