Postcard from New York, and the Super Bowl

Well after two weeks of hype, we finally got on a bus and headed to MetLife Stadium for a football game. And while this was submitted at halftime, I can accurately predict that Seahawks fans reading this are really happy this morning, or devastated after the biggest collapse in Super Bowl history. And in that case, your computer is probably broken/your paper is being burned, so you’re not reading this anyway, right?

As expected, based on observations around New York the past couple of days, this was a decidedly pro-Seahawks crowd. That only escalated as the score continued to grow.

And in a sports-writing first for me, I’m writing this in a dark press box while Bruno Mars performs in the background. No, this really isn’t just another game.

To pick up where we left off Saturday night, a few media folk went to dinner in the East Village at a place called Upstate Craft Beer and Oyster Bar. It came recommended by Jeff Evans, one of the fine folks in the Seattle Mariners media relations department, and it was quite delicious (I highly recommend the crab cakes). As an added bonus, getting out of the Midtown/Times Square area let us escape some of the madness, while also get at least one subway trip in, a must while in New York, right?

Media was bussed out to the stadium starting early Sunday afternoon. From there we waited in a security line that would make any crowded airport jealous (they take security seriously at these things, for obvious reasons). I had hoped to wander around and soak in some atmosphere, but said security line made leaving the stadium an unattractive option. Oh, well.

Even so, even from a glassed-in press box, you can definitely sense the electricity of this event. Now time to get back to work, assuming they get the lights back on (come to think of it, probably shouldn’t make that joke after last year’s Super Bowl).
