First off, let me apologize for the lack of the usual game thread. Our blog system was down today and didn’t get up until the fourth quarter, and by then I figured most of you didn’t really want updates from this one.
As you’re all well aware I’m sure, the Seahawks were steamrolled 42-24 by the Chiefs, who rushed for 270 yards and hung 503 yards on Seattle’s once-proud defense. This was a loss so ugly that even Pete Carroll, the embodiment of optimism, struggled to say anything nice about this game.
“It was a most disappointing day,” he said. “We didn’t play anywhere near like we had planned. It just didn’t work out in any phase, although special teams made some things happen.”
Later Carroll talked about how disappointing it was to lose in such a manner in front of a home crowd: “It was a bad day for us out there… We played like garbage out there.”
About the only good news—aside from a monster game from Ben Obomanu, who had five catches for 159 yards—was the fact that the Seahawks appear to have escaped without any significant new injuries. CB Marcus Trufant left with a leg injury, but returned to action, while C Chris Spencer suffered a leg injury on the final possession of the day. Carroll also said that LB David Hawthorne had some sort of chest injury.
As expected, Mike Williams didn’t play because of a foot injury, and that was a big factor in the Seahawks’ offensive struggles.
“That was big, that was really big,” Matt Hasselbeck said. “He’s big, and it was big… Who we are offensively has a lot to do with the kind of player that he is on that weakside wide receiver position. He’s a big, strong, physical guy and he’s not necessarily the fastest guy, but he’s real big, real sure-handed, those kind of things, and he has a good feel for what we’re doing offensively. When he’s not there, we’ve just got to come up with a solution.”
