Mike Meseberg said hunters are taking pintail, green-winged teal, goldeneye, redheads and large mallards in the north Columbia Basin, perhaps indicating northern birds starting to show in the area. He said he has seen bluebills in groups of up to 50 birds, but warns they aren’t legal until Dec. 1.
Lesser Canadas have been reported just north of Potholes Reservoir near Banks Lake, and “we’re all waiting for those big flights of geese to move a little farther south to the Potholes Recreation Area to start off a great season,” Meseberg said.
Meseberg said fall walleye fishing is still in full swing on the reservoir and that the Potholes Canal was shut last week, causing reservoir water levels to rise rapidly. That should allow better boat access to the sand dune area for anglers and waterfowl hunters, he said.
