Practicing in the rain

This afternoon’s practice brought the first real rain of training camp. There was a bit of slipping and sliding going on, but the weather didn’t seem to affect play too much.

A few new injuries today, though all are reportedly minor. Cornerback Josh Wilson and safety Deon Grant both started practice but didn’t finish because of groin injuries. T.J. Houshmandzadeh also called it a day early with what was said to be an ankle injury, though it must have been a pretty minor injury because he seemed to be walking just fine. Receiver Courtney Taylor spent the day working out on the side of the field with a knee injury.

Five more players continued to be out: G/C Grey Ruegamer (elbow), C Chris Spencer (ankle), T Walter Jones (back), CB Marcus Trufant (back) and LB Will Herring (groin). LB Lofa Tatupu was back after taking yesterday off, but didn’t take part in the team portion of practice.

Speaking of linebackers, newcomer Aaron Curry was a part of one the funniest moments in practice. During a blitz-pickup drill, Curry badly beat Justin Forsett, and when the second-year running back got up, he stayed in the field and signaled he wanted another chance. Curry blew by him again on attempt No. 2.

Monday also brought a pretty good scuffle between cornerback Josh Wilson and receiver Michael Bumpus, but that was broken up pretty quickly after the two went to the ground.

It was a pretty eventful day for Wilson, who in addition to getting in a fight and getting hurt, also had a nice pick on a Matt Hasselbeck pass, and only moments before that was chastised by some of the fans on the sideline for slowing to a jog after Logan Payne beat him deep.

There was a lot of blitzing during the team portion of practice, and the No. 1 defense was definitely getting the better of the No. 1 offense. To be fair, however, that was a first-string line missing Walter Jones and Chris Spencer.
