Kamiak, boys cross country

The senior surged to a come-from-behind victory in the Class 4A boys state cross country race Saturday at Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco.

Spady channeled enough extra energy to pass Eisenhower senior Robbie Barany near the finish line and earn Kamiak’s first individual state cross country title. Both runners finished the 3.1-mile course in 15 minutes, 24 seconds.

“It looked like he clearly surprised Barany,” Kamiak coach Charley LeWarne said Saturday. “Barany’s got wheels. He’s a heck of a runner. To run him down like that, that’s not something Barany’s used to.”

Spady finished 10th last year in 15:53, one spot and two seconds behind Barany. LeWarne called Spady’s performance nice but not amazing – he knew the Kamiak star was capable.

Spady endured patella tendonitis in both knees last summer. The injury cut his normal training schedule from 600-plus miles to barely 100, according to LeWarne. In the long run, the extra rest might have helped.

“I know that by the time he got to run again, he was hungry to run,” LeWarne said.
