The junior sprinter led Marysville-Pilchuck to its third straight Western Conference North Division title by winning two events and helping the Tomahawks win two relays.

Costello’s best performance may have come in the 1,600-meter relay. Facing a seemingly impossible deficit as he took the baton for the last lap of the relay, Costello caught Snohomish’s anchor on the final stretch and won by a half of a second.

“That was an amazing victory in the 1,600 (relay),” M-P coach Randy Davis said. “I didn’t think he (Costello) was going to catch the leader. But once Dan believes he’s going to get him, usually good things happen.”

Costello edged Arlington’s Brenton Bodewig in the 100 meters, finishing in 11.38 seconds. He won by a wider margin in the 200. His time of 22.72 was a half of a second faster than the runnerup. The M-P 400 relay team was also victorious.

“We wanted to just come out and perform like we know we could,” Costello said.

Lindsay Woodhouse

Mountlake Terrace softball

The junior pitcher allowed just three hits in two games last week while helping the Hawks clinch a district playoff berth.

Woodhouse’s best performance in a solid year may have been on Tuesday, when she hurled a one-hit shutout in a 3-0 victory over Jackson. With the help of superb defense behind her, Woodhouse retired the first 20 Jackson batters she faced. The Hawks, who had been shut out three times during a five-game losing streak heading into last week, finally clinched the postseason berth that had eluded them for two weeks behind Woodhouse’s gem.

“That was huge,” Mountlake Terrace coach Kim Stewart said. “We were kind of snake bit for two weeks there. I think there were times when we were wondering if the sun was ever going to come up again.”

Woodhouse followed the Jackson game with a two-hit shutout of Mariner. Woodhouse showed flashes last year when she was used sparingly to spell starter Michelle Ness.

“She’s been real steady,” Stewart said. “It’s been a pleasant surprise. She’s far, far exceeded our expectations.”
