PREP BASEBALL: Brakke’s 2-run pinch double lifts Monroe to 4-3 victory

MONROE — It only took one at bat for David Brakke to become the hero.

After coming to the plate as a pinch hitter, the Monroe senior doubled home two runs with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift the Bearcats to a 4-3 victory against Snohomish Wednesday at Monroe.

The win forces a tie for the Wesco North championship, as each team finishes 13-3 in league play.

“It was the first game he hadn’t started and it just seemed like the right move at the time to put him in,” Monroe head coach Neil Henderson said of Brakke. “It was an exciting win for the kids.”

Even though Snohomish and Monroe are co-champions, Snohomish will still get the top seed for the district playoffs due to its earlier sweep of Marysville, a team the Bearcats split with.

Monroe trailed 3-2 going into the bottom of the seventh when Zac Miller started a rally with a single. Jack Hansen hit a one-out double to put runners at second and third for Brakke, who knocked each of them home with his game-winning double.

“We were just hoping to put something together. We had the bases loaded three times earlier and two of those came up empty,” Henderson said. “We were on the verge of scoring and just needed somebody to be the hero.”

Monroe had nine hits in the contest against a bevy of four Panther pitchers. Jacob Reppert earned the win for the Bearcats after pitching the final two innings and allowing no runs on one hit.

Both Ian Parmley and Tyler Ihrig were 2-for-4 for Monroe. Bubba Robbins went 2-for-4 with a triple, a run scored and an RBI for Snohomish.
