Prep baseball: Lynnwood 9, Shorecrest 4

LYNNWOOD — Going into Friday’s game, the Lynnwood and Shorecrest baseball teams were headed in two different directions.

The Royals may have made a key u-turn in their season.

Coming off of a pair of losses to Everett, Lynnwood shut down red-hot Shorecrest and beat the Scots 9-4 behind the arm and bat of Jordan Silva on Friday.

“I told them ‘Play loose and play your game,’ ” said Lynnwood head coach Adam Villalobos. “They followed the game plan and did what we told them and it paid off.”

Silva scattered nine Shorecrest hits and after a rocky second inning shut down the Scots high-powered offense the rest of the way. The senior struck out four to improve to 2-1 on the season.

“He’d get hitters 0-2 and then throw a bad pitch,” Villalobos said of Silva’s problems in the second inning. “But after that inning he got in his groove and was sharp. He figured it out and pitched differently.”

Trailing 4-2 going into the bottom of the third, Lynnwood coaxed a walk to lead off the inning and then River King reached on a bunt to start a four-run rally that would give the Royals the lead for good. Silva, who finished the game 2-for-2, had a two-run double and Cory Hoerner had an RBI double in the rally.

Winners of five of their past six games, Shorecrest was alone in first place in Wesco 3A going into the game, but the loss, coupled with Glacier Peak’s win over Everett, drops the Scots to second. Lynnwood remains in the middle of the pack, but Villalobos said the win was key for the Royals.

“It’s a big confidence booster,” Villalobos said. “Shorecrest is a good hitting team and they’re at the top of the league. This was a big win for us.”
