MOUNTLAKE TERRACE — For the Mountlake Terrace baseball team, the third time was the charm Wednesday when the Hawks dispatched Lake Stevens 4-2 thanks to a walk-off homer in the bottom of the eighth inning.
After trying to play the game Monday at Lake Stevens then again at Terrace Tuesday, the teams finally got to open the regular season on the artificial surface at Mountlake Terrace H.S.
“It felt good to get the win,” Terrace coach Andrew Watters said. “It’s just a good start and that’s all It is. I’m not reading too much into it.”
The players dodged raindrops and the Hawks escaped a tight pitcher’s duel to snag the victory.
Despite recording just four hits, the Hawks got the biggest hit to end the game.
Terrace catcher Keegan Volpone led off the eighth with a walk and Austin Johnson got ahold of a Kyle Cho (0-1) pitch, sending it over the center-field fence.
Josh Fitch (1-0) recorded the win in relief of Alex Hatch, who pitched four innings of scoreless ball and struck out five.
Three double plays kept the Vikings off the scoreboard through the first six innings as the Hawks nursed a 2-0 lead.
“That was a huge part of the game, how we held them in check,” Watters said.
The defense slipped up in the seventh after the Vikings got runners on first and second via a hit and a walk. Two Hawk errors led to the tying runs.
Watters was very impressed with the pitching on both sides.
“Anyone could have won that game,” Watters said.
