Prep baseball: Mountlake Terrace 6, Marysville Getchell 3

MARYSVILLE — Mountlake Terrace used clutch pitching to overcome six errors and defeat Marysville Getchell Thursday night to advance in the Wesco 3A District Tournament.

Starter Jesse Prothero pitched a complete game with six strikouts for the Hawks, who will visit Marysville Pilchuck Saturday at 1 p.m. after winning Thursday’s play-in game.

“He pitched tough,” Terrace head coach Andrew Watters said. “He was efficient and threw strikes. It saves some pitching for us going into the playoffs.”

Prothero maintained his composure and surrendered only eight hits despite shaky defense behind him.

“The field was really bumpy and a few of the errors were just bad hops,” Watters said. “Jesse did a good job and was able to get out of it.”

The Hawks trailed 1-0 heading into the third before slugger Zayn Phillips got the ball rolling with a two-run single.

“That got us going,” Watters said. “We were able to build off that and score some runs.”

Jared Maxfield went 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI for Terrace, while teammate Drew Serres added an RBI on a 3-for-3 night at the plate.

The loss ends Gecthell’s season, although there is much to build on for 2016. Several key contributors return next season, including Thursday’s starting pitcher Collin Montez.

As for Terrace, they live to play another day and will practice Friday before Saturday’s big game.

“Right now, we’re just happy to get the win and get in the tournament,” Watters said.
