PREP BASEBALL/SOFTBALL ROUNDUP: Meadowdale overcomes five-run deficit

LYNNWOOD — After a five-error top of the first inning that allowed Kamiak to take a 5-0 lead, it seemed like the members of the Meadowdale baseball team might still have their minds on vacation in this the first week after spring break, according to Mavericks coach Bill Hummel.

Hummel asked his leaders to step up in the bottom of the innning and they responded, pulling out an 8-7 Wesco South victory.

“We’ve had a problem with (errors) the last week or so,” Hummel said. “It’s time for our leaders to take charge.”

Andrew Suh, one of Meadowdale’s two senior captains, was the one of the major culprits and major saviors on the day. The third baseman had two errors in the first inning that resulted in a handful of unearned runs for the Knights.

“We just threw the ball all around the infield.” Hummel said. “We couldn’t make a play.”

After a disappointing first inning in the field, Suh responded with a nearly perfect game at the plate. He batted 2-for-2 with a double and the game’s only home run, scored twice and walked twice to go with three RBI.

The Mavs tied the game at seven after two innings and squeaked one past Marshall Pennock in the sixth for what proved to be the winning run.

Pennock was masterful in relief, striking out 13 in five innings pitched, but took his first loss of the year.

Sophomore Matt Hirsch came on in the sixth for the Mavs and got six outs for his first varsity win.

Knights starting pitcher Chriss Guinn batted 2-for-4 with a triple, two RBI and a pair of runs scored. Jake Sorter also hit 2-for-4 with three RBI in the losing effort.

Hummel was proud with the victory but mostly hoped the comeback was a lesson for his team.

“Baseball throws a lot of adversity at you,” he said. “You are going to fail a lot.”

The victory broke a tie between the two teams for second in the Wesco South standings with Meadowdale (6-2 league) now holding a one-game adavantage over Kamiak (5-3).
