LYNNWOOD — A strong second half was almost, but not quite, enough for Glacier Peak to sneak past Meadowdale (17-4 overall) on Friday at Meadowdale High School in a battle for the Wesco 3A’s first seed to the District 1 tournament.

After trailing by 10 points at halftime, Glacier Peak (12-9) managed to tie the score at the end of the third quarter but was unable to overcome a strong performance by Meadowdale’s Khalid Surur. The senior guard hit seven of eight free throws in the fourth period to seal the 45-42 victory.

Glacier Peak scored only 10 points in the first half, but in the third quarter Nick Persha scored 16 points and Brandon Hill added 10 to put the Grizzlies back in contention.

“(In the fourth quarter, Roger) O’Neill put us up with a big 3-pointer and we held on to the lead,” said Meadowdale assistant coach Dean Wiley.

O’Neill, a 6-foot-4 senior, led the Mavericks with 16 points. Persha scored a game-high 18 points and had four 3’s for Glacier Peak.
