PREP BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Meadowdale girls fend off Stanwood comeback

STANWOOD — The Meadowdale girls basketball team had no problems playing over the holiday break.

Sophomore Margreet Barhoum and senior Julia Fjortoft each scored 19 points and Meadowdale defeated Stanwood 67-56 in a non-conference game at Stanwood High School.

“We stayed with our game plan,” Meadowdale head coach Troy Parker said of the victory. “Stanwood made a couple runs. … They like to get up (and run) like we do.”

Parker said that Meadowdale made a small change to its press defense after Stanwood cut the Mavericks’ lead to two points in the fourth quarter, and that the change enabled his team to push its lead back up to more comfortable territory.

Stanwood was led by Rachel Swartz, who scored a game-high 20 points.

Parker also credited Dana Horn (nine points) with staying active in the paint.
