MUKILTEO — Playing without senior guard Hannah Fjortoft, Meadowdale overcame early turnover problems and defeated Kamiak 52-46 Saturday at Kamiak High School in Wesco South play.

“I feel like this is as good a team win as we’ve had all year,” Meadowdale coach Troy Parker said.

Meadowdale had success attacking the basket and getting to the free-throw line. The Mavericks were 17-for-25 from the line while Meadowdale was 9-for-14.

The succesful dribble penetration also put Kamiak’s starting five on the bench with foul trouble for much of the game. Michelle Lipscomb spent considerable time on the bench after picking up three fouls in the first half. Samantha Sovich and Kelsy Patrick ended the game with four fouls each and Kariah Kussman fouled out.

“I thought we did a good job of attacking the basket tonight. It makes your job easier when you can get to the free throw line on the road,” Parker said.

Julia Fjortoft led all scorers with 17 points and Michaela O’Neill scored 11 points off the bench, including two key 3-pointers in the fourth quarter.

“It was a tight game and (O’Neill’s 3-pointers) gave us some breathing room,” Parker said.

Kelsey Patrick scored a team-high 15 points and also had eight rebounds and six steals.
