Prep basketball/swimming: Mariner starts hot, cools off Jackson

EVERETT — Mariner certainly knows how to start out hot — and cool off opponents.

Rallying behind the play of Nick Malysheff and Damascus Purnell, Mariner showed its offensive prowess and shutdown defense, defeating Jackson 66-53 in a Wesco South boys basketball game Tuesday at Mariner High School.

Mariner improved 11-2. Jackson — which had an opportunity to clinch a district playoff spot with a win — fell to 8-4.

“We really just wanted to be able to execute our offense efficiently and just wanted to pound the ball inside,” Mariner assistant coach Tom Jensen said. “When they (Jackson) collapsed the defense, we were able to knock down outside shots.”

Mariner jumped out to a 22-15 first quarter lead as Malysheff scored six points and teammate Michael Minor had seven points, including two 3-pointers in the quarter. Purnell finished with 14 points, shot 5-for-7 from the foor and had 10 rebounds. Malysheff also had 10 rebounds and finished with 15 points.

“We have great leadship from Tevin Dillon and great fundamentals,” Jensen said, referring to Dillon’s ability to setup and swap defenses on the fly. “He did a great job running the game and controlling the tempo.”

When the fourth quarter came around, Mariner was still pressing its play to the max, holding Jackson to just nine fourth-quarter points.

“We really tried to come out and force the issue defensivley,” Jensen said, as Mariner started the game with a man-to-man defense and switched to trap and zone looks in the second half.

When asked if Mariner found motivation in defeating a Jackson team that is on the cusp of reaching the district, Jensen replied “We are not concerned with other team’s storylines and go out every game to play our game and lets the chips fall as they may. Our progression needs to be improved every game.”
