EVERETT — Only a point separated Sultan from Archbishop Murphy at halftime of Wednesday’s boys basketball game.
Then the Wildcats opened the second half in a full-court press, outscored Sultan 15-5 in the third quarter of the Cascade Conference game en route to a 55-51 victory at Archbishop Murphy High School.
“The third quarter run for us was huge … we got to them a little bit,” said Archbishop Murphy coach Jamar Williams.
“Our defense in the second half really won us the game.”
Sultan’s Brock VandenEkart made four 3-pointers in the first half. In the second, he didn’t make one, but the junior forward still finished with a game-high 22 points.
Archbishop Murphy had 11 steals and was led by the solid all-around performance of Phil Hoban with 13 points, three rebounds and four assists.
Zach Gordon scored 14 points and gathered six rebounds for Sultan.
