MT. VERNON — The Cedarcrest Red Wolves missed out on a chance to advance to the Class 2A regionals on Monday when they ran into Burlington-Edison.
Behind the offensive outbursts from Eric Walser (30 points) and Will Stewart (23 points), B-E defeated Cedarcrest 81-57. The Red Wolves now need to win two consecutive loser-out games to advance to regionals.
On Monday, the second and fourth quarters did in the Red Wolves. Cedarcrest head coach Micah Rieke thinks his team just got tired.
“Honestly, I think we just ran out of gas,” Rieke said. “We just stopped moving, Offensively we were real stagnant in the second and fourth quarter.”
But it didn’t start that way for Cedarcrest, it jumped on B-E early, taking a 21-19 lead after the first quarter.
“We came out and were on fire and we were ready to go,” Rieke said.
The inside play of Walser proved to be too much for the Red Wolves.
“Basically, Burlington just pounded it in to the Walser kid and we couldn’t stop him,” Rieke said.
Colton Rekers led Cedarcrest with 17 points, including five 3s.
