Prep boys basketball: Mountlake Terrace 61, Monroe 54

MOUNTLAKE TERRACE — Gabe Altenberger scored a game-high 23 points to lead Mountlake Terrace to a 61-54 victory over Monroe in the season opener for both teams.

“He got some transition baskets. He pretty much did a little bit of everything,” Mountlake Terrace assistant coach Greg Wirtz said. “He didn’t miss many shots.”

The Hawks (1-0) used a 22-point second quarter, knocking down three 3-pointers in the period, to take a 37-27 lead into the half. Monroe did damage of its own from the outside but was never able to overcome the early deficit.

Alex Johnson and Rhen Shore each scored 15 points and combined for eight 3-pointers to lead the Bearcats (0-1).

“You can tell we are really young,” Wirtz said. “Defensively we have to work a little harder. We can’t give up eight 3-pointers.

Ryan LaCasse scored 14 points and grabbed five rebounds and Derek Anyimah added 17 points and six assists for the Hawks.
