MOUNTLAKE TERRACE — Junior guard Blake Hernandez scored 18 points and Mountlake Terrace used a big third-quarter surge to remain undefeated with a 71-55 win over Glacier Peak on Tuesday night.
Up by 10 points at the half, the Hawks outscored the Grizzlies 23-8 in the third quarter to seal the win and remain perfect on the season.
“We had a really good third quarter,” Mountlake Terrace assistant coach Greg Wirtz said. “They went into zone (defense) and we hit three 3-pointers right away from three different guys.”
The Hawks also played their best quarter defensively in the decisive third period, limiting the Grizzlies to eight points. Said Wirtz: “We were playing straight man-to-man (defense). We played pretty good. Pretty tough.”
Wirtz also said a major key to the victory was rebounding. Mountlake Terrace had three different players with at least nine rebounds, led by Coby Russell with 12. Greg Bowman added 10 rebounds and Ryan Shannon had nine.
Glacier Peak was led in scoring by the 18 points of junior Zach Pederson. Jacob Davelaar added 15 points for the Grizzlies.
With the win, Mountlake Terrace moved to 11-0 in league play and 15-0 overall. But, according to Wirtz, the Hawks still have much improving to do.
“We still have five games left,” he said. “We need to do a better job of executing our offense. We need to work on that a little better.”
