PREP BOYS BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Lynnwood holds on to victory

BOTHELL — Seeding can mean a lot come playoff time, so when Lynnwood and Everett squared off in a Wesco 3A seeding game, both teams knew what was at stake.

But it was Lynnwood which came out on top, earning a 43-33 win Tuesday, and moving on to face Shorecrest on Thursday for the No.3 and No.4 seeds to the 3A District 1 tournament. After the loss, Everett is the No.5 seed.

The game was a tale of two halves, the first belonging to Lynnwood and the second belonging to Everett. The Royals just did a little more damage in their half of domination.

Lynnwood built a 30-11 halftime lead behind the play of its big men, Simi Fajemisin and Drew Botts. For the game, Fajemisin scored 10 points and grabbed eight rebounds and Botts added nine points and seven rebounds.

In the second half, however, the Seagulls made a run. Taking advantage of Lynnwood turnovers, they outscored the Royals 22-13, but it wasn’t enough.

“If we didn’t jump out like we did early, it would have been a whole different ball game,” Lynnwood head coach Darrell McNeal said.

The Royals managed to convert on just two field goals in the second half, but knocked down free throws late in the game to secure the win.

“I believe we sustained the lead because we were able to make free throws,” McNeal said.

Will Brown paced the Seagulls’ scoring attack with 10 points.
