PREP BOYS BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Snohomish knocks off Lake Stevens, clinches district playoff berth

SNOHOMISH — Lake Stevens could have clinched the Wesco North championship on Friday, but it was the Panthers who did the clinching.

Snohomish defeated first-place Lake Stevens 54-44 and with Arlington’s loss to Cascade, the Panthers clinched a 4A District 1 playoff berth.

“It’s a great win for us, but we play Stanwood on Tuesday so we need to move along, it’s going to be a challenge,” Panthers coach Len Bone said.

Bone said a fast start helped his team to the victory on Friday.

“I think it was big to get ahead,” Bone said. “It’s not easy to get ahead of them and it’s not easy to stay ahead.”

The Panthers were led by Blane Ortiz and Jon McGee, both with 12 points. Ortiz helped the Panthers to the early advantage, scoring nine of his 12 points in the first quarter.

Bone said his team also defended well and credited that as a reason for the win.

“They don’t usually score 44 points, so we were happy with that,” Bone said.

Shane Kaska led Lake Stevens, which suffered just its second league loss, with 17 points.
