Prep boys basketball: Stanwood 65, Shorecrest 64

STANWOOD — Carlton McDonald sank the second of two free throws with .4 seconds remaining in the game to lift the Stanwood boys basketball team to a 65-64 non-conference victory over Shorecrest on Tuesday night in a rematch of last year’s district championship game, which was won by the Scots.

McDonald was fouled going up for an offensive rebound, and missed the first free throw before hitting the second to send the Spartans (4-2) to the win.

“He made the tough one,” Stanwood coach Zach Ward said of McDonald. “He’s one of my best free-throw shooters, but we shoot enough of them that I would put any of my guys up there.”

Shorecrest’s Drew Magaoay’s 27 points led all scorers, and Stanwood failed in its attempt to hold him under 20 for the game. Magaoay erupted for 12 of the Scots’ 19 points in the third quarter and scored 18 of his points in the second half as the teams went into the fourth quarter tied at 45.

“They located him in different spots on the floor in the second half and we had a tough time matching up and communicating on defense,” Ward said.

Stanwood was balanced offensively with three double-digit scorers, and had success breaking down Shorecrest’s zone defense.

Karsten Chaplik scored 18 points to lead the Spartans, who were desperate for a win after a 63-47 loss at Mercer Island last Friday.

“I told the guys after the game that I don’t care about anything else but a win,” Ward said. “We wanted to bounce back after a disappointing showing at Mercer Island when we weren’t very good. We had stretches where we struggled offensively tonight, but when were at our best when we shared the ball.”
