Prep boys roundup: Lynnwood’s second-half turnaround beats Glacier Peak

LYNNWOOD — Behind by 16 points at halftime, Lynnwood head coach Darrell McNeal decided to dial up the pressure and the Royals responded with a come-from-behind 53-51 Western Conference South win over Glacier Peak Friday at Lynnwood High School.

“I told them at the half that we’re going to have to turn up the heat a little, turn up the pressure,” McNeal said.

The Royals started swarming Glacier Peak with full-court pressure in the second half and cut the deficit to six points at the end of the third quarter. Lynnwood continued to shoot the passing lanes and get ball deflections which led to quick offense, McNeal said.

“Our guys we’re getting tips on the ball and we were able to recover it,” McNeal said. “We were able to get some turnovers to spark our run.”

Lynnwood was led on the offensive end by Aaron Matzen’s 20 points. The Royals also got a big layin late in the game by 6-foot-9 junior Simi Fajemisin, who had 14 rebounds. Geoff Meinken pitched in 11 points, 13 rebounds and a free throw in the closing minute to put the Royals up by five.

A foul on a 3-pointer allowed Glacier Peak to cut the lead to two points on Brandon Hill’s free throws with four seconds to go, but Lynnwood held on for the win.

“I have to hand it to my players,” McNeal said. “Their defense was the complete difference in the game.”

Hill led Glacier Peak with 18 points and Jack Bonner added 13.

Lynnwood outscored Glacier Peak 37-19 in the second half.

“We really had to work to get back into this game,” McNeal said.
