Archbishop Murphy is back in the 2A boys soccer final four for the first time since 2006, when the Wildcats lost 2-1 to Highland in the title game. Murphy (16-5) plays District 1 rival Squalicum (15-6) at 6 p.m. today at Sunset Chev Stadium in Sumner.
Murphy has never won the 2A championship, but it placed first in Class 1A in 2003. It also won the 1A title in 1994, when the school was known as Holy Cross.
Murphy has won six of its past seven games, including state-tournament triumphs over Hoquiam and Steilacoom. The Wildcats have outscored opponents 48-28 this season.
Class 3A semifinals
Led by Gatorade Washington Boys Soccer Player of the Year Michael Harris, Shorecrest has an impressive 20-1 record and has racked up 72 goals, nearly 3.5 per game. But the Scots’ semifinal opponent, Mercer Island (17-0-1), is unbeaten. It should be a great battle at 2 p.m. today at Harry Lang Stadium in Lakewood.
Harris is a versatile midfielder/defender whom Shorecrest coach Drew Thompson can plug in anywhere on the field. A junior who already made a verbal commitment to play for the University of Washington, Harris has seven goals and 11 assists this season for a Shorecrest squad that has outscored foes 17-0 in the playoffs.
