SNOHOMISH — With the top spot in Wesco North on the line Saturday night, Marysville-Pilchuck defeated Snohomish 2-1 in a boys soccer game that required every extra minute possible to decide a winner, extending into two overtimes and a shootout.
Tied atop the North going into the game with 3-0 conference, both teams were looking forward to facing each other for the first time this year.
“It’s always fun to play against Snohomish. They’re always well coached, they play a good style of soccer. The game is always competitive. Either way it goes, it’s always been enjoyable,” said M-P head coach Geoff Kittle after the victory that improved his team’s record to 4-0 in the league and 5-0 overall).
Marysville-Pilchuck’s lone goal came when Kyle Reynolds made a long switch from the right side of the field to the Anthony Johnson on the left in the 73rd minute. Reynolds trapped the pass and put the ball into the right corner of the goal.
Carson Pingrey tied the score for Snohomish (3-1, 3-2) in the 79th minute with a free kick from 25 yards out that bounced off of M-P’s center back Gustavo Jaramillo and past goalkeeper Kyle Bluhm.
Both teams had a number of scoring opportunities in the overtimes. Marysville-Pilchuck’s Johnson broke through the Snohomish defense and just missed a goal in the second overtime.
“We might have got a little lucky in the game. Both teams struggled to finish tonight,” Kittle said.
Trevor Leman scored on Snohomish’s second kick in the shootout, getting the ball by Bluhm on the left-center of the goal. The Panther’s other tries either missed or were saved by Bluhm.
Johnson, Jaun Mendoza, Mitchell Metcalf each scored on their kicks in the shootout for M-P, beating Snohomish goalkeeper Ryan Peters.
