SHORELINE — The Lake Stevens boys soccer team’s bid for a state tournament berth fell short Saturday after it lost to Mount Vernon 2-0 in a winner-to-state, loser-out game in the 4A Northwest District tournament at Shoreline Stadium.
The Bulldogs got on the board early when Marco Quezada notched the first of his two goals on a somewhat controversial play.
It appeared that a Mount Vernon player tripped over the ball in the penalty box, then slid on the ground through traffic to make a pass, according to Vikings coach Wes VanHooser. Lake Stevens (13-6-0) believed the goal should’ve been waived off as a dangerous play.
“It took us quite awhile to get back from that first goal,” VanHooser said.
With the Vikings needing a goal as time was running out in the second half, Lake Stevens sent extra players to the front to try and create pressure on the Bulldogs’ defense.
“We created quite a few chances to score in the second half but couldn’t get anything to go,” VanHooser said.
Quezada added to Mount Vernon’s lead late, finding the back of the net for his second goal of the game.
